Despite the reliability issues of the time, IMO these are all prime examples of excellent overall design. So clean. The headlights. Smooth, flowing body lines and well incorporated tail lights.

To each his/her own. It also seems like that vehicle was going for a sea creature/ sea monster look?
As for your other note, I do like Mercedes' current lineup, except for the 231 and its awkward proportions. Its too busy!

I prefer the newer body styles but I think these look great as well. The design is over 10 years old but clean examples look much newer still.

R231 looks much better in person I think, especially in AMG guise. I do agree that it can look a bit awkward from some angles. But lots of people love them, they seem to sell really well.
